A gas burner that clicks endlessly, or clicks with no burner turned on, is one of the most common stove complaints there is. The good news: the top causes are things you can fix tonight without tools. The important news: a couple of causes are worth respecting.
Fix It Tonight
- Moisture, the number one cause. A boil over or an enthusiastic cleaning session leaves water around the igniter, and it clicks until dry. Remove the grate and burner cap, dry everything you can reach, and let it sit an hour, or speed it with a fan. Most clicking ends here.
- A misaligned burner cap. If the cap sits crooked after cleaning, the spark cannot reach the gas properly and the igniter keeps trying. Lift the cap and reseat it so it sits flat and centered. This fix takes ten seconds and solves an amazing number of calls.
- Crumbs and grease in the burner ports. Blocked ports make weak, patchy flames that the system keeps sparking at. Clear the little holes with a straightened paper clip, never a toothpick that can snap off inside.
When It Is a Real Fault
- Clicking with all knobs off after everything is bone dry usually means a shorted spark module or a failing switch behind a knob, a standard repair.
- A burner that clicks but never lights while others work fine points at that igniter or its wiring.
