In a state where ice is a household utility, ice makers fail here more than almost anywhere, and the reason flows from the tap. Our mineral heavy water clogs the narrow lines, coats the valves, and scales the molds. Each symptom points at a specific stage of that process.
Symptom by Symptom
- Production slowed to a trickle: the inlet valve or line is scaling shut. Ice makers need decent water pressure to fill; a half blocked valve fills the mold partially, and the machine dutifully makes miniature cubes. This is the most common call and a modest repair.
- Hollow or small cubes: same story, earlier stage. Also check that the freezer holds near zero; a warm freezer from a struggling garage unit makes weak ice.
- Cloudy ice: mostly dissolved minerals, our water’s signature. A fresh filter improves taste and clarity, though desert ice will never be gallery clear without a better filtration stage.
- Bad tasting ice: an expired filter, or ice absorbing freezer odors. Replace the filter on schedule and toss the first bin afterward.
- Total shutdown: check the simple things first. The wire arm or sensor may be jammed by an ice dam, the supply valve behind the fridge may be off, or the line may be frozen solid, which a hair dryer on low fixes in minutes.
The Maintenance That Prevents It
- Replace the water filter on the printed schedule, not when the light finally nags
- Dump the bin monthly so old ice does not fuse and jam the mechanism
- If you soften your water, the whole problem shrinks; see the hard water survival guide
Valve and ice maker assembly swaps are quick visits priced in the cost guide. Book a fridge repair or call 480-406-7487 and your ice comes back this week, not this season.
