Refrigerant is the working fluid of your air conditioner, and regulations have pushed the industry through three generations of it in twenty years. The generation in your system, printed on the outdoor unit’s data plate, shapes every repair decision you will make. Here is the field guide.
R22: The Retirement Case
If your system predates roughly 2010, it likely runs R22. Production and import ended years ago, so remaining supply is recycled and expensive. What that means practically:
- Any leak repair carries a painful refrigerant bill on top of the fix
- A major R22 repair almost never beats putting that money toward replacement; run our 50 percent rule and it fails nearly every time
- These systems are also 15 plus years old, past the typical Arizona lifespan anyway
R410A: The Current Majority
Most systems installed from the 2010s until recently run R410A. It remains available and repairs remain economical, so a leak on a 9 year old R410A system is usually worth fixing properly. The key word is properly: finding and repairing the leak, not just topping off. Our leak service exists because top offs are rented cooling, not repairs.
R454B and the New Generation
New systems now ship with lower impact refrigerants, most commonly R454B. If you buy a new system today it will use the new generation, parts and supply will be mainstream for decades, and there is nothing to worry about. It is one more reason the replacement math keeps improving for owners of elderly R22 equipment, especially with financing spreading the cost.
Find Your Label
