Air conditioners are built to run in long, steady stretches. Starting is the violent part: the compressor draws a huge surge of power, oil has not circulated yet, and parts slam from rest to full speed. A system that short cycles does that dozens of extra times a day. It cools poorly, burns extra electricity, and ages years in a single summer.
Start With the Simple Causes
- Thermostat placement or fault. A thermostat in direct sun or near a supply vent thinks the house cools instantly and shuts down. Weak batteries cause erratic behavior too.
- A clogged filter. Restricted airflow can trip safety limits that stop the system early.

The Electrical Middle Ground
A weakening capacitor lets the compressor start, struggle, and drop out repeatedly. This is the most common repair in Arizona and it announces itself with a click, a hum, and a stall. It is a quick fix at a modest price, and Protection Plan members get a free replacement if theirs has failed.
The Serious Causes
- Refrigerant loss makes pressures fall outside safe ranges, tripping switches that stop the compressor.
- An oversized system. A unit too big for the house blasts the thermostat cold and shuts off before completing a proper cycle. It never dehumidifies well, which matters during monsoon weeks. Why You Should Not Wait
Short cycling is the rare problem that gets more expensive by the week, because every extra start chips at the compressor.
