What SEER Ratings Actually Mean for Your Arizona Power Bill

Efficiency ratings matter more in Arizona than almost anywhere in America — because nobody's AC runs harder than ours. Here's the plain-English version, with real math.

When you shop for a new AC, every quote leads with a SEER number. Salespeople love it; homeowners mostly nod politely. But in a place where the AC runs close to 3,000 hours a year, that number translates directly into dollars — so here’s what it actually means.

SEER in One Paragraph

SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures how much cooling a system produces per unit of electricity over a season — think of it as your air conditioner’s miles-per-gallon. Higher is better. Since 2023, new systems are rated under SEER2, a stricter test that better reflects real ductwork; a SEER2 number reads roughly 0.5–1 point lower than the old scale for equivalent equipment. In the Southwest, new systems must be at least 14.3 SEER2 (roughly 15 SEER old-scale).

The Arizona Math

Efficiency percentages compound with runtime. A system that runs 800 hours a year in Ohio hides its inefficiency; one that runs 3,000 hours in Pinal County can’t. Rough annual cooling costs for a typical 4-ton system at Arizona runtimes and current utility rates:

SystemTypical AgeApprox. Annual Cooling Cost
10 SEER2000s builder-grade$1,800 – $2,200
14 SEER2015-era$1,300 – $1,600
15.2 SEER2 (≈16 SEER)today’s standard tier$1,100 – $1,400
17+ SEER2 variable-speedtoday’s high tier$900 – $1,200

These are honest ranges, not sales-brochure numbers — your house’s size, insulation, and duct condition move them. But the shape of the math holds: replacing a 2000s-era 10-SEER system typically cuts cooling costs by a third or more, which in Maricopa means $600–$1,000 a year. Over a 15-year system life, the efficiency difference can pay for a meaningful chunk of the new equipment.

Where the Brochure Math Lies

  • Leaky ducts erase SEER gains. A 17-SEER2 system pushing air through ducts that leak 25% into a 150° attic performs like a 12. Duct sealing and duct service come first.
  • Oversizing wrecks efficiency. A too-big system short-cycles: it never reaches its efficient steady state and it dehumidifies poorly during monsoon season. Proper load calculation beats “bigger is better” every time.
  • A dirty system loses a point a year. Fouled coils and clogged filters quietly degrade any SEER rating. Seasonal tune-ups protect the efficiency you paid for.

When the Upgrade Makes Sense

  • Your system is 12+ years old and facing a major repair — run the 50% rule
  • It uses R-22 refrigerant (pre-2010) — any refrigerant repair on those is throwing good money after bad
  • Summer bills feel wrong for your square footage — get a load calculation before assuming the AC is fine

“Mike texted before his arrival. Was neat, clean and professionally dressed for repairing our Maytag refrigerator which was not cooling at all. He troubleshot, removed and replaced the factory authorized part, and checked to ensure the repair worked. All completed in less than 45 minutes but not rushed.”
