Is Your Cold Air Escaping Into a 150 Degree Attic?

You pay to make cold air. Leaky ducts pour it into the hottest place in your house before it ever reaches a bedroom.

Duct leakage is the invisible efficiency thief in East Valley homes. Almost all our houses run ductwork through attics that hit 140 to 160 degrees in summer, so every crack and loose joint dumps expensive cold air exactly where it does the least good. Studies routinely find 20 to 30 percent leakage in typical homes. Here is how it shows itself.

The Six Signs

  • One or two rooms never cool, especially rooms far from the air handler. The air headed there leaks out along the way.
  • Your power bill looks wrong for your square footage. The system runs longer to replace what the attic ate. Our bill spike guide ranks the usual causes.
  • Weak airflow at some vents but strong at others.
  • Dusty rooms right after cleaning. Return side leaks suck attic dust into the airstream and blow it through the house.
  • Whistling or fluttering sounds from vents or the attic when the blower runs.
  • The system is newer but performance disappoints. A high efficiency unit on leaky ducts performs like an old one. This is the trap we flag in our SEER guide.

Why It Happens Here

Attic heat cooks duct sealant and tape until it dries, cracks, and lets go. Flexible duct sags over the years, and joints pull apart. Homes from the 2000s building boom are hitting the age where original sealing gives up all at once.

What Fixing It Looks Like

A proper visit inspects the full run, reseals joints with mastic rated for attic heat, reconnects anything pulled loose, and clears the debris that years of leakage pulled in. Paired with a duct cleaning, the result is usually felt the same day: stronger airflow, rooms that finally match, and a shorter runtime on the same thermostat setting.

“Mike texted before his arrival. Was neat, clean and professionally dressed for repairing our Maytag refrigerator which was not cooling at all. He troubleshot, removed and replaced the factory authorized part, and checked to ensure the repair worked. All completed in less than 45 minutes but not rushed.”
